Personal Style

My industrial “backyard” in Bushwick. Further proving my insanity by shedding layers.

“Major Winter Storm Hits Northeast”

“BLIZZAPOLIS!”

These were some of the headlines I read when checking the weather websites Sunday morning, yet… I don’t know what possessed us, either the crazy weather was inspiring or we’re insane, but Beegi and I decided to do a photo shoot in the midst of a chaotic BLIZZARD, with high gusts of wind flinging snow in our faces and numbing our limbs. Not exactly a peaceful winter wonderland, but certainly an interesting (and freezing) experience!

I’m wearing my favorite winter items of the moment: my studded earmuffs, my silver puffer that everyone describes as that “crazy spaceman jacket” and my funky yellow scarf that FRAAS sent me. Aside from being a fan of anything houndstooth and loving the shirring detail in the center, what’s notable about this neckwrap is it’s made of a material called Cashmink(R), an exclusive acrylic that is finer than cashmere, but at a fraction of the price ($30-40). Also comes in a variety of colors, patterns and styles. I’m all for splurging on quality product, but sometimes you can be stylish without sacrificing your wallet.

By the time the blizzard tapered off, NY was buried in nearly 2 feet of snow… Fun to look at, but admittedly tough to trudge through. For a city that never stops, the snow messed up subway lines, several businesses were closed and a lot of travelers were stranded. But I still made it to work on Monday!

P.S. Notice anything new with my hair? I actually did this a few weeks ago, but haven’t posted; I have blond pieces now!

Merme the Butt comes by to wreak havoc while we’re snapping away.

At times, inspiration comes from necessity. This outfit came about because I had a monstrous pile of laundry that I needed to drop off at the laundromat. After having a semi-dramatic “I don’t have anything to wear” moment, I threw together a mix of clothing that I wouldn’t typically wear together. As a result, here’s an eclectic, layered, new look. Chic, yet comfortable and cozy too; I’m wearing three hoodies!

Speaking of hoodies, I finally got to wear my Threadless Select hoody tee with “Birds of a Feather” design by Ross Zietz. I’m already a fan of Threadless.com, an online t-shirt shop where artists submit their designs, people vote and the winning designs are selected for printing and sold. Now Threadless has a new line, Threadless Select, where Threadless curates art from a selection of previous winners and there’s more options in the use of colors, fabrics and shirt styles. The shirts are “printed with water-based inks on finer cotton, to be sofer and eco-friendlier.” I love sites that encourage an artistic community.

The JNBY piece was another item I bought from a trip to China in October. JNBY originated in Hangzhou, which is my brother’s wife’s hometown. I love their modern, sculptural, deconstructed silhouettes, so when I was in Hangzhou, I kind of went crazy and splurged there. You’ll see more JNBY pieces integrated in upcoming posts.

THINGS I LIKE TO COLLECT:

Whenever I travel, I like to find unique fashion pieces that make a statement. I got this gray sweater top from a recent trip to China, at a boutique in Hangzhou called Before. It drapes beautifully when you wear it, but what initially caught my eye was its unusual shape (see below).

Tights: Vivid colors, interesting textures, bold prints; the crazier, the better! Here are my new favorite tights from Skunkfunk. You’ll definitely see me wearing more funky legwear this winter.
